Do I need a rental car?

We recommend getting a rental car, especially if you plan on exploring St. Thomas and St. John (via the car ferry). A rental car allows for maximum freedom and you don’t waste time waiting on taxis.  We have found that the breakeven point for using taxis vs. renting a car (for two people) is about 4 days (less if you have more in your party).  Taxis charge flat rate fee from point to point per person and this can add up quickly.  The only time we recommend using taxis is if your stay is 4 nights or less and you plan on hanging out on our beach with maybe a dinner or two in Red Hook.

We have found that the local rental car companies provide the best service and have no issues with car availability upon arrival. National chains Avis, Budget, Thrifty, etc, tend to overbook and often do not have a car for you when you arrive.  For that reason, we recommend using local companies. If you are interested in a Jeep for the duration of your stay, ask us for more details.
